BEETHOVEN “MISSA SOLEMNIS” – help us to keep the music coming – please donate.
Did you know that none of the 70 or so members of our choir get paid for singing? In fact, each must pay an annual subscription to be in the choir. With no State or Civic subsidies, this subscription helps cover some, but not all of our costs.
Our next major performance will be Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in the Sarah Baartman Memorial Hall at UCT in October 2019. This is a major work and represents a great challenge to a community choir such as ours.
The work demands a substantial orchestra and four soloists and the cost of putting on a concert like this is enormous. We will be giving the student members of the UCT Symphony Orchestra the opportunity to play this important mass with professional, experienced orchestral musicians. The Gentlemen’s Ensemble, a group of ten professionally-trained singers based in Gugulethu, may join us too for some of the male voice parts.
But even if we get an audience of 500 people at the concert, we are looking at a shortfall of just under R85 000. Can you help?
We love singing and bringing the moving harmonies and compositions of the world’s most famous composers to you and the greater Cape Town community.
There is a lot to be said for making and sharing choral music. Without it, we will all be the poorer.
