The Music goes on

The choir committee has decided that the concert that was due to be held at the Lutheran Church on 23 May 2020 will be postponed to a date that will be announced as soon as we can establish a time and venue which will ensure the safety and health of both our choir members and of our audience.  We are certainly not cancelling it, in fact, thanks to the efforts of Alexander Fokkens, our musical director, and our accompanist, his wife Margaret Foxcroft, we are carrying on learning the music for our next two concerts in the safety of our homes using whatever means we can thanks to digital media and the internet.

We believe that the music we had selected for our next concert is highly appropriate for the times we are in; Haydn’s Nelson Mass, which is not the title which he gave it.  He called it “Missa in Angustiis” (mass for troubled times), presumably referring to the threat of an enemy, Napoleonic invasion in his case; not all that different to the threat that we are facing now.  We have also decided to add the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to the programme, a beautiful and calming piece in this time of angst.  We are hoping to secure the services of Becky Steltzner as the soloist for this beautiful piece.

The concert after that will comprise two Beethoven items; the Mass in C and his piano fantasia.  We think that this is also appropriate in the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth and will complement the Missa Solemnis which we sang last year and which is to be presented by the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town and the Johannesburg Symphony Choir later this year.

Weekly talks by Alex Fokkens

We have also started a series of weekly talks via Facebook live and we encourage anyone who is interested to join Alex every Monday morning at 11am via Facebook Live On the Choir Facebook Page to listen to him chat about various topics.

These chats are meant to be interactive, so this is an opportunity for you to ask him to answer any relevant questions that you have via the “comments” option while watching the live video.

If you are unable to be online at that time on a Monday, all the videos will be saved on Facebook for you to watch at your leisure. They are also available on Alex’s YouTube channel If you have any topics that you would like to be featured, please let us know

Thank you for your ongoing support of us and of choral music in Cape Town and we look forward to being back with you at our concerts.  In the meantime, stay safe and healthy.
